Achieving the Possible: A Middle East WMD Free Zone – NPT Side Event

The Middle East Treaty Organization (METO), along with the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UN and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung–New York Office, hosted a Side Event at the 10th Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference on August 9, 2022 at the UN Headquarters.

The event was an opportunity to look at the development with regards to the Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone (WMDFZ) in the Middle East, including the results of the last November conference on the zone that took place in New York, and the latest efforts to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also knows as the Iran nuclear deal.

Speakers discussed relevant elements of the latest version of the Draft Treaty produced by expert members of METO. This fifth version of the Draft Treaty includes the proposal of models for regional verification and mechanism of compliance.

The panel speakers included:

  • Orlaith Fitzmaurice, Director of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland
  • Mohamed Elghitany, Director of Disarmament and Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt
  • Leonardo Bandarra, Senior Research Associate, METO and the Centre for Integrated Interdisciplinary Nuclear Verification Research
  • Sharon Dolev, Founder and Executive Director, METO
