Mapping Just Transition(s) to a Low-Carbon World

Just Transition Research Collaborative

The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), and the University of London Institute in Paris are launching today an essential new report on the State of the Art of Just Transition.

Drawing on the expertise brought together by the Just Transition Research Collaborative, this report seeks to contribute to the ongoing and increasingly urgent debate on the role and place of equity and justice in the shift towards a low-carbon world.

This document provides an overview of the different understandings, framings, and uses of “Just Transition” that dominate present debates and negotiations. Through a social science lens, it aims at identifying potential synergies and tensions between these understandings, while connecting them with the ongoing global discussions around climate change and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. It features case studies from Brazil, Canada, Germany, Kenya, South Africa, and the United States.

The report also includes policy recommendations and explores how “Just Transition” could be better embedded into transition debates and policy-making.

This report is available for download in English only.
