Socialism in Canada?
The Broadbent Institute is a think tank for the New Democratic Party of Canada. This social democratic party is part of the opposition in the Canadian Parliament and forms the government in half of Canada’s provinces. In the U.S., it would be the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, up to and including its far left. With the recent election of Avi Lewis as its new leader, the party has shifted further to the left.
Therefore, it was a fortunate coincidence that the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung began an official partnership with the Broadbent Institute this year for the first time. The Foundation’s New York office, which is also responsible for Canada, made this collaboration possible. We partnered with them for this year’s Ellen Meiksins Wood Lecture, held annually in collaboration with Toronto Metropolitan University.
Bhaskar Sunkara, founder of Jacobin magazine, received the 2026 award. In his speech, Sunkara described how socialism could work in the real world. In September, his book The Blueprint, which he co-authored with Mike Beggs and Ben Burgis, will be published. His remarks were met with great applause from the audience of over 100 people.
This year’s event marked the beginning of a new partnership between the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung and the Broadbent Institute.
