New York City’s Mayor Mamdani plans to take on NYC’s affordability housing crisis with new homes and a rent freeze for stabilized apartments. Housing affordability is a global concern. Cities like Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, and London are seeing rents increase rapidly. These housing concerns have led to new bottom-up strategies and innovative policies to make housing affordable again. Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies Talja Blokland will discuss with housing experts from sociology, Andrej Holm (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin); geography, Loretta Lees (Boston University); and urban studies, Sophie Gonick (NYU SCA), what lessons New York City may learn from the fight for housing affordability in European cities.

Lunch will be provided.

WHEN: Thursday, April 23, 2026, 12:30-2:00 p.m.
