Navigating the Two-Party System

Unity in opposition to Trump is very different from unity of purpose within the Democratic Party, which at this point is the primary vehicle for thwarting a Republican Party that grows ever more extreme by the day. Progressives who work inside the Democratic Party recognize that President Joe Biden is more amenable to their goals than was Trump. That does not, however, make the Democrats the left.

U.S.-China: Progressive Internationalist Strategy Under Biden

A progressive internationalist alternative to the escalating U.S.–China conflict requires a transformation of the global system as a whole. To succeed, progressive forces in the U.S. must continue on a path toward taking political power, but we must also significantly strengthen our thinking on foreign affairs. The internationalist dimension of progressive politics remains worryingly weak and has not yet produced a coherent approach to a wide range of difficult questions concerning China that are unfamiliar even to most internationalists in the U.S.

At the End of the Week

On Tuesday, November 3, the eligible citizens of the United States elected a new president, representatives, senators and state legislators. This is probably the most important election in decades. Today, on Friday, a lot of the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, it is too early to give a comprehensive analysis. But, of course, the team of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung New York Office has a lot of thoughts on our minds that we’d like to share with our audience. So we asked every member of the team: What is on your mind this morning?

The COVID-19 crisis has exposed the contradictions laid bare underneath the glitz and glamour of New York. New York, a global hub, center to finance, arts, and culture, is at the same time a city facing an inequality crisis bringing along poverty, homelessness, and displacement.

Politics Against Trumpism

“Donald Trump has been framing the narrative of American politics since he launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in June 2015. A master of media manipulation who utilizes social media more skillfully than any political figure in the country—and perhaps the world—Trump has defined the American discourse by forcing the country to respond to his policy pronouncements and provocations. That does not mean that he has prevailed in every debate; indeed, the president has faced fierce and often effective resistance. Yet, because he and his partisan allies have so dominated the federal government and the media coverage of that government, it has been almost impossible to have a debate about anything other than Trump.

Donald Trump’s Dangerously Coherent Agenda

A president who was supposed to be “non-ideological” has come to exemplify the rigid ideology of “conservatism without conscience” Amidst the surreal and hyper-rapid churning of Donald Trump’s America, it can be difficult to grasp what is clownish spectacle and what is deadly serious. Is his latest Tweet a flight of fancy, a cynical distraction, […]

100 Days of Trump

Having now had 100 days in which to judge the Trump presidency, let me be as blunt as possible: There is not a single redeemable feature in the man or his administration. Any claim that suggests otherwise is based on delusion. Any argument that this represents a continuation of even “normal” Republican politics is belied […]

Trump and American Decline

Reactions to Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States oscillate between great trepidation and great mockery. Will Donald Trump do something outlandish—something with terrible consequences—or will what he does bring discredit on himself? Uncertainty dogs the next US president and his administration. The old establishment seems sidelined and the “deep state” appears bewildered.

Where Do We Go From Here?

From June 17-19, 2016, 3,000 activists and supporters of Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign met in Chicago to discuss the future of the movement. Taking this “People’s Summit” as his starting point, activist and writer Ethan Young advocates for a strong left and a “united front” with other progressives in order to shake up the system: […]
